I am quite baffled by how so many people are willing to spend significant sum of money for a monitor, but neglect proper monitor calibration. Asking for calibration settings, ICC profiles and whatnot is mostly useless because they vary between each individual monitor and GPU. Same settings on another display of same brand and model and same GPU will yield different results.

Therefore, please make a reasonable investment in a colorimeter rather than suffer from poorly calibrated monitor. The cheapest colorimeter at this time to my knowledge is the. How it works? In monitor OSD settings you first reset settings, then select brightness that best suits you. Then let the colorimeter do calibration for you.

More expensive colorimeters have more options, but Spyder 5 Express should be perfectly fine for the people who don't do image-/video editing work. I've personally used Spyder 5 Express at home and at work to calibrate 7 displays in total, and it makes considerable difference. Well worth the 110€ I paid for it.. The video shows the Elite model, which has more software options than Express.

Attempting to calibrate a TV using HDMI may not work. I tried to calibrate my TV, but calibration failed because the TV didn't send some data required for calibration. I do not know whether this is an issue with all TVs. Even if TV calibration does work, the ICC profile is stored on the computer on which calibration was made.

Which limits usefulness of calibration on TVs. Datacolor does have a different product specifically for TV calibration though,. Fun fact: All Spyder 5 devices (Express, Pro, Elite, Studio) are exact same device. Only the software and maybe what they bundle with the device differs. Express obviously has the most limited software. One popular alternative software is, but I have not used it myself.

Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with Datacolor. I specifically meantioned Spyder 5 Express because it is to my knowledge the cheapest colorimeter you can buy. Whereas Spyder 4 TV HD is to my knowledge the only colorimeter for TV calibration. Well, the thing is that if you don't work with video/graphic editing that requires standardized color output on your screen or you don't need to color match multiple screens - there isn't really much point. You can just set the colors to what you personally like and it will be OK for 99% of use cases. I work with graphics professionally but it is all digital output (mostly web stuff) so there is no point in calibrating even for me.

Everyone will have their screens set up differently to mine anyway so they won't see the same colors as I do. Having said that, it is a good idea to let people know that such a thing exists and that what they see on their screen doesn't match what others see on theirs color-wise.

Don't forget that by calibrating your monitor, you usually get better contrast when colors are closer to what they should be, including black. I don't do anything on my PC that would require color accuracy. I simply enjoy seeing better colors and contrast in games, movies, tv-series, etcetera. I can only speak for myself, but calibration did make a considerable difference.

You could certainly spend quite a lot of time manually fiddling in monitor and GPU settings to get where you're mostly happy, but you could get there in 5 minutes with little investment and be assured you get good results, monitor itself allowing. Even if you don't do standardized color output, if you do any kind of photo editing, for instance your pictures in Lightroom, you'll want to calibrate the screen. It's not just to make sure it looks good on other screens (which as you note is hard), but also to ensure that you get the optimal color balance and contrast. If you ever want a print of those pictures, it's better if you've gotten things right the first time. If you watch movies on your screen, calibration is also great for making them look their best.
