Shows come and go. While some fail miserably to generate high TRP ratings, others create a ripple in society, garnering perhaps more fans than a film can even attempt to do.
2012 has been no exception. While many shows did not see the light of the day, some continue to stand out in the minds of viewers. And nothing brings people closer than a show that helps families bond over content that stimulates emotionally, morally and intellectually. Here's a look at such shows of 2012.
Satyamev Jayate- Aamir Khan's debut show on TV has broken all records in the history of Indian Television. And rightly so.
With 13 episodes, Aamir not only stirred the entire nation with sensitive social topics that are generally considered taboo in Indian society, but also managed to shake the political system of India and bring about a change. His opening episode on female feticide awoke the conscience of Indians throughout the world and caused the Chief Minister of Rajasthan (Ashok Gehlot) to take notice. Even Ram Sampat's musical compositions at the end of every episode heightened the viewing experience for audiences. Satyamev Jayate became the talk of the town with every politician, media house, viewers, social activists and members of the film and TV fraternity applauding the 'star' for his ground breaking research and he was also dubbed as the Indian Oprah Winfrey.
Diya Aur Baati Hum- For months in a row, Diya Aur Baati Hum topped the TRP charts and continues to rule the roost as the Numero Uno show in the fiction genre. Sooraj (Anas Rashid) and Sandhya's (Deepika Singh) unique circumstances and their growing love story on the show has struck gold with viewers. Diya Aur Baati Hum has won several awards including several awards for best television show in the fiction category. Devon Ke Dev.Mahadev- This mythological show on Shiva has glued viewers of all ages to their TV screen. Mahadev is a recipe of success with the right storyline, costumes, actors, music, writer and director.
And the episode that needs special mention is the one featuring Kali killing the demon Raktabija, which aired on 9th September 2012. That single episode has garnered the highest TRPS since 2011, beating all other shows across all genres. The show's popularity has also worked in favour of the male lead Mohit Raina whose success seems to have grown leaps and bounds with Mahadev. Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon?- Barun Sobti and Sanaya Irani's chemistry on the show is what made Iss Pyaar Ko popular!
Although the storyline did not have much meat, it was Sanaya and Barun's onscreen pairing that had fans going crazy about the two. So much so that when the makers deiced to abruptly end the show on 30th November 2012, they were bombarded by fans to bring the show back by popular demand. Although Sanaya Irani was reportedly unhappy with the abrupt ending, co-star Barun Sobti decided to quit the show to pursue his Bollywood dream. Sanaya and Barun have won the Best Jodi award at several award functions including the People's Choice Awards India, going on to prove that actors can be bigger than their shows.
Bade Achhe Lagte Hain- TRPs don't necessarily always decide the fate of a TV show. Such is the case of Balaji Telefilms' Bade Achhe Lagte Hain with Ram Kapoor and Sakshi Tanwar as the main leads. This mature love story has appealed to the newer generation too and Bade Achhe manages to be in the news for some reason or the other.
First it was Ram and Sakshi's lip lock on screen and the consummation sequence that was the most discussed topic amongst fans and viewers. Then it was the five year leap on the show that took the form of a debate between the makers and some of the actors on the show who were not too happy with the time leap. When the hunt was on to introduce a new character opposite Sakshi Tanwar (eventually bagged by Sameer Kochhar), that too created much speculation.
Then there were talks of Ram Kapoor quitting the show but to audiences' delight, Ram continues to be a part of the show. All we can say, Ram and Sakshi Bade hi Achhe Lagte Hain sabko. Madhubala-Ek Ishq Ek Junoon- Madhubala-Ek Ishq Ek Junoon debuted in May 2012 as a tribute to 100 years of Indian cinema. This larger than life daily shot in Ramoji City (Hyderabad), is almost a serialized version of a film. With a huge star cast boasting of popular names like Vivian D'Sena and Drashti Dhami, Raj Zutshi, Raza Murad, Rakhi Vijan and the late AK Hangal, Madhubala may not boast of high TRPS but the treatment and of course Drashti and Vivian's huge fan following has made it one of the top shows of 2012. Whether the plot and storyline work or not, Drashti's simplicity and Vivan's charm is enough to keep the show running for a long time come.
Na Bole Tum Na Meine Kuch Kaha- This is one show that makes a comeback with season two because of the show's popularity. Although Na Bole Tum Na Meine Kuch Kaha was not an instant hit and took a while to build up, debutant actress Aakanksha Singh and fellow co-star Kunal Karan Kapoor managed to create a stir with their onscreen chemistry. The storyline and the entire cast and crew, especially the two children- Ashnoor Kaur and Vishesh Bansal added to the show's charm. When Na Bole ended in October (2012), fans went crazy demanding that the show should not go off air. And their wishes have been answered as Na Bole makes a comeback with season two in January 2013.
