Always has been. So while I know this was Stefan’s POV and thus focused on his side of the events with Katherine, I would’ve also loved to have seen more of Damon’s journey. It's marketed to sell the back history of a character, emphasizing the drastic revisions the characters went through. Unfortunately, it deviates from the television show in a lot of ways. So basically we have a book series with a television show based on it with numerous deviations and a book series based on that television show with numerous deviations. We're one step away from a worm hole.

Most of the back history about Stefan and Katherine is mucked up here. The order of scenes, like the Founder's Ball, and when Katherine and Stefan first slept together or when she first fed and compelled him are totally out of whack. In this series Stefan's engaged pre-Katherine and she murders his fiancee. So really these books do not even serve the purpose for which they were created. I'm team Damon all the way in the first series by LJ Smith, on the television show, and fuck it all even from Stefan's POV I'm team Damon.

I thought this book would warm me up to him. He's sort of childish and simple-minded in this series. He changes his mind so often about everything it will drive you up a wall. You don't get any drastic insight into the character. The final huge minus for me is that this book takes place after the burning of Atlanta in the South. Barbeques and picnics and engagements still take place. Damon leaves the army because he doesn't believe in it and there's no social shunning -- he's freaking welcome back to play poker when he wants.

This book covers his relation to he, the vampire hunt in his town and a bit of Damon too. SPOILER WARNING FROM THIS POINT IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THE BOOKS OR SEEN THE SERIES!!! So in the books, both Damon and Stephen fall in love with Katherine and literally fight to the death over her and since she had been feeding off them, the both turned to vampires. Not quite so here, while they do both fall for her, as Stephen sees her true nature he is horrified and turns away from her while Damon accepts her.

When the hunt is on, he helps Damon free her. Yet they fail, Katherine is apparently 'killed' as are Damon and Stephan by their own father. They aren't yet dead though, and are instead something between vampire and human. Stephen hunts down a young girl, feeds as he finishes the turn and giddily gives the same girl to his brother so they can be vampires forever together. So stopping there for a second.that does not even make much sense to me.

Stephen was horrified by Katherine in the end. Utterly repulsed by her. So suddenly he is Gung-ho about being a Vamp? Makes no sense to me. Another big difference from the books is that Stephen is the one unhappy as a vampire and Damon glorifies in its power. In this, Damon didn't want to feed and live forever.

So overall, the story was fun to read. Easy flow and nice characterization but is sways so far from the book and the books came well before the series. This ghost author should have followed the books, not the series! Otherwise, let this be an episode and not a book. Let a book follow a book. Okay, I am putting an end to this rant. But it is why I rated it the way I did.

The writing is simple but the story is complete and very good with elements of suspense and romance throughout; Stefan trying to live up to his fathers expectations, young love and the jealousy yet unbreakable bond between two brothers as they vie for the same mysterious woman. I wouldn’t have any trouble recommending this to anyone (of any age) who enjoys historical romances as it can easily be read as a stand alone without ever having seen the TV show or reading the original series. I would also like to point out that it felt VERY forced the way LJ added in characters from the show: Pearl, Anna, Jonathon, etc. The old VD books made you connect with every character so you knew their importance to the storyline, but this book did not do that in the least. I felt the only person it wanted me to like was Katherine, which ironically is someone we're made to hate in the old books.

I ended up LIKING her after this book, which seems rather stupid given how much we're made to hate her in previous (later?) books. I am thoroughly disappointed with what LJ did to this series, I've lost complete respect for her as an author. I’ve always knew that these book series’ were different from the actual book itself, The Vampire Diaries. It is very obvious why; this is only based on the TVD novels by L.J. Smith and the TV series developed by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec (you dont believe me? It says so on the cover).

The Vampire Diaries TV show series is my favorite TV series of all time, like forever, like for all eternity. If you've been keeping up with the more recent LJ Smith Vampire Diary books, you'll definitely feel the difference both in that this is written by others and that it's meant to be a companion piece to the show instead of the book series.

It has a slightly darker more adult tone than the book series and doesn't feel as shall we say 'out there' as some of the LJ Smith ones have felt recently. If you're a fan of the series I don't think you'll be disappointed though you won't feel as though there is anything new here if you've been watching the show. Then if you've watched the show, then the rest of the book is the familiar story of the vampires being found by Jonathan's compass during the vampire siege, Katherine being tricked into ingesting vervain when she bites Stefan and was dragged out to the vampire cart, muzzled, and with 23 other vampires, dies in a fire at the church. Stefan and Damon are shot while trying to rescue Katherine, dies, and finds out they've both been turned into vampires.

I felt like this book is a companion recap of the show itself, but what does make it interesting was Stefan's viewpoint, and how different Damon seems before he turned into a vampire. If you love the show and want a companion book on it, this one will be a good souvenir. It is nothing at all like L.J.

This is the first book of Stefan's Diaries and therefore tells the story of how Stefan and Damon met Katherine in the TV show version. If you have watched the TV show you know how it happened and it is pretty much same in this book except for Stefan. But bare with me.

THE WORLD: In old times when gentlemen were supposed marry ladies picked for them by there father Salvatore family lived in Mystic Falls. Yes, same TV show weird name. Anyways, the world is simple, we have all these boys and all these girls getting married and worrying about silly things. There are dark things in this world but few are aware. CHARACTERS: There are three main characters in this book: Stefan, Damon and Katherine. Now let me start with Stefan. He is kind and silly and falls in love with Katherine blindingly.

That is what we already know. But what we did not know and what was for me a big surprise was that Stefan is also a huge coward. He gives his one true love (TV Show srsly ruined this phrase for me, now all I can do it roll my eyes whenever I hear it) for just being looked at as good. I was super shocked. Did not see that coming at all. Shame on you Stefan.

Then we have Damon.just old boring Damon except that he is actually the smart one in this book. I always picture TV Damon as annoying spoiled brat.

And then comes Katherine. She stays exactly like in the show: selfish, stupid and manipulative.

I know many of you would add pretty but frankly I do not see it. I just don't. LOVE: We all know it.

Damon loves Katherine. Stefan loves Katherine. Katherine loves Katherine. PLUS: It refreshed my memories of the show. MINUS: It was like reading a draft of 12 years old child.

No creativity, no actual value. OVERALL: I read it and that is all. It was decent enough to finish but I will not read further any books based on the TV show. This book is definitely Stefan's diary but it is very much a prequel to the events of Vampire Diaries. It actually begins before Katherine even shows up. This covers the category of my own choice on the bingo board. I decided to read this book because i follow the series and i really enjoy it so i wanted to read the book as well to see the differences between the program and the book. Although the book is interesting, i still enjoy the program This book didn't really make me think about much because i know the events that happen in this book are not real but at times when the book gets really dramatic i still think what if. My favorite quote in this book is when Katherine says to Stefan 'Don't worry. Remember you still have my heart'.

He is my favorite character because he has a mind of his own and he does not let anybody tell him what to do unlike his brother that is weak and will do anything anyone tells him to do. What really pissed me off is that they decribe katherine to have dark eyes and dark curls???:S they are describing katherine from the vd show and not the katherine from the original books who had blue eyes and blonde hair, this furthur adds to my suspicion that the book was not written by l.j. Herself as she would not change the appearance of a character that she created and she would not change all the backstory they she wrote herself. The book does not actually say that it is written by her - this book was written by someone else and looks like a quick and easy way to get money by fans of the books/show.

It was a terrific idea of the writers to give viewers of the show and readers of the book the ability to embark on the adventures of Stefan, Damon and Katherine back in the Civil War times of 1864. I read this book within a few hours, this is a combined factor of the book only being 200 pages long, a font size bigger than 12, and extremely wide margins - but the story is captivating and exciting and would recommend it to anyone who watches or reads the vampire diaries, or anyone generally looking for a va,pore thrill in an old fashioned setting. If you watch the show: This book is about Damon, Stefan and Katherine in 1864 and their love triangle. Up until then, I couldn't help but feel somewhat exasperated that she would completely alter her original plot just to match the TV show. But now that I know she didn't pen it, I can enjoy The Stefan Diaries for what it is—an entertaining companion piece to my favorite show. First off, so much has changed. Stefan and Damon's pre-vampire days and their history with Katherine has been completely altered from what happened originally in L.J. Smith's books.

If you've read them, you know that Katherine's decision to take her ring off in the sun was the catalyst to centuries of bitterness between the Salvatore brothers. That didn't happen in this book. Other little discrepancies include the fact that Katherine's maid was really Gruden in the original (not Emily Bennett) and Giuseppe Salvatore had no idea that Katherine was a vampire. Even the way Stefan and Damon became vampires was altered in that there was no duel to the death this time around. Basically, The Stefan Diaries throws a ton of stuff out the window and adheres to the events of the television show almost to the letter. At first, I kept getting out my copy of L.J. Smith's The Awakening and trying to make sense of it all.

But then I decided to take the book for what it was (a fun re-imagining of Stefan and Damon's 1864 pre-vampire days). And you know what? It turned out to be a lot of fun. In all honestly, I prefer L.J. Smith's writing regarding my favorite characters, but I do have to admit the plot line of The Stefan Diaries (like that of the show) is so much better. Smith's writing was more intuitive when it comes to the characters though; she really has her pulse on what makes the Salvatore brothers tick and her writing always made me connect with them. In The Stefan Diaries, it felt like various people were thrown in way too hastily, perhaps just to give us die-hard fans a little thrill.

These characters (particularly that of Pearl and Anna) seemed two-dimensional and rather forced to me. That was my biggest qualm with the book- the lack of attention taken to really bringing the characters to life. The characterization that threw me the most was Katherine. What I liked: In L.J. Smith's books, Katherine was so immature and child-like, I always had a hard time picturing her as a woman of marriageable age and understanding what the Salvatore brothers saw in her. The Katherine in this book was different. She was more mature, more sensual – I felt Stefan's pull toward her.

I actually liked her better in The Stefan Diaries, for the most part. What I didn't like: Katherine's complete lack of menace. If the book is going to mirror the show, it needs to stay true to Katherine's personality. This Katherine had a conscience and seemed more of a victim of circumstance than the calculating, opportunistic vampire diva we have all grown to know and love on the CW. Katherine is supposed to be a greedy, violent she-devil, who will stop at nothing to get her way. Yet in this book, it seemed like she was relying on Stefan too much to protect her, when her own natural vampire defenses would've been so much more useful. Damon's characterization, on the other hand, was spot on.

Dark, mysterious and more than a little dangerous, his appearances were actually my favorite and what kept my interest going. I could practically hear the words rolling off his lips and his scenes actually made me get out my copy of Season 1 and play a few key episodes. Stefan, on the other hand, was way too passive and 'woe-is-me' for my taste.

I hope in the next book, he shows a more hardened and wizened outlook on life. (Final Note: I am a certified Vampire Diaries-aholic. I look forward all week to Thursday nights on the CW and I've read all the books.

I've even been known to poke around online looking for my own Elena replica and Katherine pendant necklace (don't judge!). Now, if you have never read the books or watched the show, but have decided to pick up The Stefan Diaries and dive in cold turkey, your take will no doubt be completely different than mine. I do think, however, that if you are a fan of the show, chances are you will enjoy the book. For me, The Stefan Diaries was a light-read—more of a way to relive my favorite CW episodes than anything else. While there weren't many surprises, I enjoyed the time I vested in the book.

Unfortunately, this book lacked in a lot of ways. The book made Katherine out to be a good character, yeah she was evil, but she didn't want to be. It was the other bad vampires doing all of the bad things. What television show were they watching? Katherine is the biggest bad ass of them all.

Even this didn't bother me too much, until they kept the entire rest of the story completely true to what had been said in the show. Why change that one detail and keep the rest of it play by play? I just didn't understand it, and it just didn't work for me.

I am not sure who this book was written. Not once does it say by L.J. It has her name on it, and the makers of the television show. But, plenty of people have told me it wasn't actually L.J. Who wrote this, and after reading it, I could easily believe it. It wasn't that it was written poorly, it just wasn't written to my taste and I enjoyed the writing in Smith's other books. Had Smith actually wrote this book 100% herself, I feel like it would have been a little more true to Stefan.

Stefan, oh my Stefan. He is probably one of my favorite book characters of all time. Is it because his T.V. Personality is smoking hot?

Is it because he comes along with a pretty hot and dangerous brother? Either way, I feel like this book didn't give him enough credit. Granted, I am used to mature vegetarian Stefan who is wise and knows the ways of the world, but I felt like Stefan was a whiney immature child in this book. When at the time period, his seventeen years would've made him a man.

Other than that I felt like the characters I had already grown to love saved this story in more ways than one. Either way, I'm happy I got to spend a few hours with Stefan and his story.

It wasn't as amazing as I had hoped this book would be, but it was still worth the read as an average young adult book. I cannot wait for book two. That being said, I am greatly enjoying this series because it provides a lot more background on Stefan and Damon, which we only see bits and pieces of in the TV show. With the exception of the story where Katherine comes to stay at Mystic Falls and the story of how Stefan and Damon become the vampires we know them as today (the first book covers these stories in more detail), the other two books have storylines that have not been touched on in the TV show up to this point. The stories are certainly intriguing. And I must admit, seeing Stefan in a light prior to the TV show has helped me understand his 'broodiness' and 'self blame for everything' a little bit more -- traits that have on several occasions, annoyed me to pieces while watching the show.

But seeing more of his human background and the expectations placed on him during his life changed that a bit for me. These were very quick reads -- I finished one of these books in 2 hours tops. The writing is simplistic and to the point, but grammatically correct. I gave it 3 stars because I'm not sure how the series would stand on it's own. By that, I mean, that the characters are not well developed in the books at all -- it's more plot and background information.

If you're familiar with the TV show, it's not really a problem because the characters you're reading about are already well-developed in your mind from the TV series. So really, I would not recommend these as great books to those of you who have not or do not enjoy the TV show. I'm willing to bet they'd fall incredibly flat for you.
